"Which is worse, to be too often protected, and thereby forget the suffering of others, or to suffer them oneself?
There is, perhaps, a middle course: to be out in the world enough to be toughened,
but to have a shelter sufficient to stave off callousness and wretchedness."

  Nous sommes arrivé à Prague!
Wikimedia: Prague from Klementinum

We arrived in Prague on the 6 December via Frankfurt (there are no direct flights from South Africa). Granpa was there to meet us and we packed all our luggage into his Merc and headed off straight for Jablonec.

The weather is scarily mild for this time of year. On average, 10°C with no rain and few clouds. Milla, our little girl, is very disappointed by the lack of snow.

The first thing we did on arrival was drink a tot of Slivovitz, the local witblitz. I never really drink much and hardly slept on the plane so I wasn't feeling very resilient. For dinner we opened a bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape that I bought at the duty free (delicious!) and drank that along with Granpa's irresistable knedlicky, roast pork, red cabbage and spinach dinner.

I promptly fell asleep in the upstairs apartment that is to be our temporary abode....

Diane,

Glad you made it safe! I'm eager to hear about your impressions and adventures. Not sure where Jablonec is in relation to Prague. It's not one of the places we visited on the weekends.

Sounds like you had a very traditional first meal. My mouth is watering at the thought.

Welcome in Czech Rep. Merry Christmass to you and yours. I hope that Mila will see the snow very soon ;)

Thanks! I took Milla to school this week and it snowed! She went crazy, she was so excited. It's the first time she's ever seen snow.

The first time I saw snow, I was eighteen years old. Back in South Africa, it NEVER snows. Well, maybe once every eighteen years and then about an inch.

Milla treats the snow like it's a mixture of icing sugar and ice cream and she spent most of the time eating it. Seeing as we're in the country, I didn't try to stop her. It can't be too toxic and she was really enjoying it.

Picture us walking through town with her munching a big ball of snow. Yes, people were giving us "odd" looks :-)
